Abstract: Since 2004, Sri Lankan students who learn Chinese has been increased, but still there is a lack of researches and reference materials on Chinese teaching, especially in Teaching Chinese Characters. At present, teachers are using very common traditional teaching methods, such as reading the characters, teaching the meaning, and writing Chinese characters on the blackboard, finally letting students to practice by themselves, which are the primary level of teaching Chinese characters.In order to solve this problem, the study intends to apply the "liushu theory" to Sri Lanka's teaching methods. AS a result of two months' research, the conclusion shows, the"liushu theory" improves the students 'ability to read and write Chinese characters. It improves the students' ability of reading Chinese as well.The study divided into five chapters. The first chapter introduces the research purpose,research methods and research status. The second chapter mainly describes the "liushu theory"and the present situation of teaching Chinese characters of Sri Lanka, analyzes the necessity of "liushu theory" applied in teaching. Then the study analyzes the learning situation of Chinese characters of students in class A and class B. The fourth chapter shows the way of applying "liushu theory" to the actual teaching. Chapter 5 summarizes the significance of using the theory of "liushu theory" and the problems that should be paid attention in teaching of Chinese characters in Sri Lanka.
