Songs on the classical Chinese poetry is an indispensable part of the Chinese vocal music and plays an important role in conveying the traditional music culture and improving the artistic accomplishment of the vocal music learners.'Thoughts on a quiet night'(Jing Ye Si)and 'Spacious Courtyard'(Ting Yuan Shen Shen)are two outstanding works in recent years that are created by composer Robert Zollitsch(Lao Luo),which receives wide praises from both the public audience and the Chinese vocal music academics. The composition of song-' Spacious Courtyard'-was based on the Northern Song Dynasty poet Ouyang Xiu's work-'Butterfly chasing flowers:Spacious Courtyard'-and the whole song applied the Western Compound ternary form:the middle section against pre-and after-sections of the song are very contrasting in the emotional context and requires high performing skills in speed, intensity, and singing methods.Another song-'Thoughts on a quiet night'-was based on Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai's poetry work-'Thoughts on a quiet night'-,which is short in form and concise in content but has a very long history. While composing this song,Lao Luo has expanded the length of the poetry content and also using the Western Compound ternary form:the introduction section starts the theme;the middle section consists of series of meaningless function words with flowing melody lines formed long and touching melody, which is contrasting against the pre-and later-sections of the song.,which requires higher skills in singing and emotion. In general, these two songs-'Thoughts on a quiet night'-and-'Spacious Courtyard'-have similar compositing techniques and musical forms, but the performance of these two works requires different singing skills and the emotional contexts are also different:one is in a sad mood and the other is light and misty.Through the analysis of the two works,we understand that the creation of songs on Chinese classical poetry and the performance of these songs requires a thorough understanding of the context of the poetry,of the vivid characters and also requires delicate emotional expressions, which are all keys factors in creating perfect songs onChinese classical poetry, and in inspiring and moving song creators, performers and the audiences.
