The annual tribute student system in the Ming Dynasty was is a set of procedures and norms followed by local schools to recommend outstanding students to the Central School, the Imperial College,in the Ming Dynasty. In the 16 th year of Hongwu(1383),when Zhu Yuanzhang promulgated this system,he requested schools in provinces, cities, and counties across the country to recommend outstanding students year by year. The purpose is to bring together talents from all over the world and leave no one talent behind..However,due to the imperfection of this system and the restrictions on the socio-political conditions and cultural and educational levels in the Southwest in the Ming Dynasty,it was very difficult to implement this system in the southwest region.Under this historical background, the Ming government implemented a relatively special tribute system in the southwestern region, and made adjustments to many aspects of the system so that it can adapt to the environment in the southwest region and eventually make this system gradually popularized in the southwest region. The system implemented by the Ming government in the southwest region has the characteristics of “flexibility” of rules,“convergence” of development, and “adaptability” of content, and it differs from the popular tribute system. The implementation of this system in the southwest region has exerted important influence on social education, talent selection, local governance in the southwestern region, and the improvement of the tribute system and imperial examination system in the Ming Dynasty.
