A psychoanalyst once joked to students who are determined to become artists that,if you have some special talents such as sensitive and unique perspectives to observe the world, and meanwhile you hope to maintain good social skills, then you may choose to have split personality and make full use of it for your creativity, which would be very successful.Since time immemorial, the personality of an artist has always been featured with certain degree of insanity and people have always been advocating in this way.Biographers tend to exaggerate a dramatic and legendary life of an artist to win readers' attention. In ancient Greek time, the oracles respected the artists' insanity as the will from the god.Later, many philosophers and psychological researchers agreed that madness and creativity have inevitable connections. The artist's madness is not random but is the result of the social environment and bipolar disorder. In a modern rational society, madness is constrained or suppressed as an unreasonable existence. From the external living conditions and intrinsic bipolar disorder, this article will analyze how madness as a pathological condition would produce and influence the artist's creativity.
