"Laocoon",the classic book in the 18 th century contains the introspection of German Enlightenment on the issues of the relationship between the ancient and modern times from the subject to the content. This article follows the clues that Lessing hinted us and meticulously interprets this subject(Laocoon)and three subtopics(on the boundary between painting and poetry, there is difference between the topics and imitation method, several perspectives on Art History). As the title of "Laocoon" shows that it is not a modern aesthetic work in a general sense. While discussing the aesthetic issue of the boundary between painting and poetry,Lessingimplicitly conveyed the difference between the classic and the modern.Learning the significance of Lessing's "Laocoon" can not only help us to understand the complexity of Germany's ancient and modern disputes, but also help us to rethink the internal problems of the modern spirit. The ideologists who participated in the ancient and modern disputes in Germany are opposed to the complete opposition between the ancient and the present, and attach importance to the inheritance of modernity to the ancient, the individual's attribution on the tradition and hook up the past and the present into a unity.Lessing in the background of the ancient and modern disputes is no exception. This article shows Lessing's efforts to return to Greek classical traditions by meticulously interpreting Lessing's quotation of Plutartch,Winckelman, and Homer, which makes us understand how Lessing treat and understood the essence of ancient Greek spiritual culture..As a philosopher of the Age of Enlightenment,Lessing's quotation of ancient resources is realistic and profound. The thesis meticulously analyzes the contrast relationship formed by Winckelman 's sense of solemnness and Homer's sense of clamor advocated by Lessing,in order to comprehensively examine the unique way Lessing tells the story of Homer in Laocoon. The thesis believes that Lessing's enlightening significance lies in the fact that except the sculptural way Winklmann has represented facing hardships,we should also have the possibility of another choice, that is Homer's poetic way.The way of the "higher category of people" differs from the savages and is more different from modern civilizations. In this sense, the “two Greeks” discussed by Lessing have already involved how modern peoplecorrectly understand the important issue of ancient times. In Lessing's view, the real“ people's heroes” will bravely choose the poetic method and correctly imitate the ancients when facing Laocoon's tragedy.
