In the 1980 s,the wave of democratization covered most of the Southeast Asian countries. The process of democratization in Myanmar had not progressed because of its complex national conditions. The military government firmly controlled the state power, making the domestic political, economic and cultural development hampered. Therefore, how to find the right direction of further democratic development is an important issue in the study of Myanmar's political development.Since the independence of Myanmar, the process of democratization had been advanced. The process can be divided into four stages, including the failure of parliamentary democracy and socialism with Burmese characteristics, parliamentary election in Saw Maun's regime and success of the seven-step roadmap to democracy in Than Shwe's regime,Thein Sein's democratic reforms and political development after 2015 election in Myanmar. On the basis of summarizing the characteristics of the process of democratization, including the military-led process, contractual compromise, inclusive politics and the road to democracy ahead is long.International reasons(sanctions from western countries, the third wave and pressures from international community),domestic reasons(domestic economic backwardness, rebellions against government from minority nationalities, and insularity of religious culture),and personal charm of Aung San Suu Kyi together led to these characteristics.
