Families are important places to raise children, the changes of which are bound to have an impact on the growth of children in every family. In the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, violent social instability has brought Chinese traditional extended family structure to its disadvantages.A series of family problems need to be solved. At this time, the western concept of small family structure gradually entered Chinese's view through Western Learning Movement. As the main force of Western Learning, western missionaries in China tried hard to respond to the agitation of family change in China in order to achieve the purpose of propaganda. They not only promoted the advantages of western small family structure in newspapers and magazines, but also translated a large number of western contemporary children literature works in the mid and late 19thcentury.In addition, they were the first to take translation activities as a means of spreading western advanced family views on children.Through several translation strategies such as adaption and emendation, the advantages of western small family structure on family children were intensified and family children views with distinct characteristics of Christianity were spread in translation text, which plays a painstaking role in urban family structure change in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China and in the process of“The Discovery of Child”in China.By 1930s and 1940s,the average population of urban family in China is between 4 and 5people,basically changing from tradition extended family with several generations living under the same roof,co-residence and common property to nuclear small family with parents living with their unmarried children together. It can be seen that the population structure of family and the structure of internal relations must be different from traditional extended family.Children are becoming the center of family.Children's material and spiritual lives are taken seriously. The new concept of children is formed, and the concept of family childcare is updated. In addition,in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, the phenomenon of divorce is beginning to emerge, together with many children losing their parents because of social unrest, children's problems caused by broken family structure cannot be ignored. The missionary translation of children's literature reveals the concern about the plight of children from broken family and puts forward the concept of salvation with Christian color. This paper consists of four parts:introduction, main body, conclusion and appendix. The research on relevant topics at home and abroad, the source of thesis, research objectives and significance were partly reviewed in the introduction. The main body was divided into three chapters. The travel path and the generation situation of influence of western small?nuclear?family structure were introduced in the first chapter, the aim of which was to illustrate the missionaries participating in the whole context of family change through Western Learning Movement. The influence of miniaturization of family structure in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China as well as the increase of broken family on the growth of children was discussed in Chapter Two through combing the text with the knowledge of social history. The third chapter also started from special representative works and connected with the background gradually formed by new family view on children to specifically demonstrate how children's literature which is translated by missionaries can affect the history of family change and the growth of children in China. It is hoped to achieve multiple interpretations of translation from the perspective of children, history, translation and literature, thus to deeply excavate the cultural value of texts translated by missionaries and to present the history of family change in modern China and children's education that the missionaries participated in.What's more,it can provide valuable reference for the development of urban family change and children's literature in China.
