The development of sports in Guangzhou during the time of Thirteen Hong(1757-1856), which make the Thirteen Hong become the home to different kind of sport culture in China. It also influenced the process of development and spread of western sports and Chinese traditional sports, as well as to reveal the exchange of Sino-western sport culture during that period. The main contents include:Firstly, the thesis briefs the management of Thirteen Hong, the evolving demand of entertainment for westerners before 1842 and limits of traditional Chinese sports before 1757 in Guangzhou. Secondly, the thesis elaborates the momentum of modern western sports in Hong area or Factories area, detailing its entering, participants,construction of sport field and organization. Thirdly, the thesis discusses the development of traditional Chinese sport after the Opium War, analysis its preliminary modernization and the impact of Thirteen Hongs’ involvement. Finally, the thesis expounds Guangzhou had become the center of modern sports spread within China and traditional Chinese sports enter the West during that time.This article draws conclusions through the analysis of early modern sports in Guangzhou. First, modern sports as a political, economic and cultural integration had occur in Guangzhou before the Opium War. Second, Guangzhou is the home of modern Chinese sports, and sport activities in Thirteen Hong period is an important part of modern Chinese sport history.It helps scholars to understand the origin, feature of early modern Chinese sport objectively and gain experience to strengthening the our sports’ cultural construction by realizing the development of sports in Guangzhou during Thirteen Hong period.
