Teaching methods have been changing with the reformation of new curriculum. In classroom, students are subjects of learning and teaching while teachers are guiders and organizers. Student activities lie at the core of classroom teaching, and effective design of student activities which essential to every Chemistry teacher is indispensable to an efficient Chemistry class. Teacher professional development is a long process that has three stages, novice teacher, experienced teacher and expert teacher, which needs everlasting efforts and accumulated experience. Three research questions are proposed in the thesis: are there any differences in the design of student activities between novice teachers and experienced teachers? What are possible causes on the differences and how to diminish them? This thesis is a comparative study which aims to compare design of student activities of different teacher types by adopting literature research method, classroom observation and interview. Firstly, the author will define teacher types, study types and design principles of student activities and summarize characteristics of effective student activities. Then, comparison and contrast will be made from the data of classroom observation and teacher interview. The major findings reveal that: 1)student activities designed by experienced teachers are more abundant, more goal-oriented and have more appropriate duration; 2) novice teachers deal more roughly with student activities and easily make mistakes; 3) novice teachers are less penetrating on student activities without further exploration. It is hoped that this study will be useful for the training of novice teachers.
