China has experienced rapid development of urbanization since the reform and opening up in 1978. Urbanization has promoted China's rapid economic growth and social development, but also brought a series of serious problems at the same time. And the most prominent and common problem is undoubtedly the drastic land use conversion that changes the use of natural or semi-natural lands for urban expansion, which has seriously threatened the ecosystem. As the material base and natural resources, the ecosystem service plays an irreplaceable role in the urban sustainable development, and its destruction will seriously threaten the sustainable development of urban system. Therefore, it is of important practical significance to objectively valuate the changes of ecosystem service value(ESV) caused by land use/land cover(LULC) changes under rapid urbanization, and take the valuation into decision-making and policy evaluation for sustainable development. The thesis estimated the dynamic variations of ecosystem service value(ESV) in response to changes of LULC under rapid urbanization by employing Tianjin as a case study, then took ESV as one of the key factors to establish a comprehensive index system for evaluating the level of urban sustainable development. Our results indicated that(1) During 2003 to 2011, Tianjin's ESV had dropped significantly, presenting the trend of first decline then up;(2) Tianjin city had a high green GDP during 2003 to 2011, the difference is not significant with the traditional GDP;(3) During 2003 to 2011, the level of sustainable development of economy, ecology and comprehensive sustainable development of Tianjin city, showed an increase tendency in fluctuation, and the social sustainable development index decreased slightly.By taking dynamic ESV as one of the key factors, this thesis established a comprehensive index system to measure the level of urban sustainable development, which provides a new perspective for the application of ESV in the sustainable development.
