As two emerging economies,China and India are playing an increasingly important role in international community and they are enjoying larger influence in international economic institutions than ever. This thesis sets the research framework according to key elements of strategy theory. There are three basic elements in strategy theory, namely strategic objective, strategic model and strategic outcome. This thesis takes three cases as research examples which are WTO,G20 and the BRICS.Based on comparison of participation strategies between China and India in these institutions, some conclusions are made about strategies which China and India take for their participation in international economic institutions. In the WTO,both China and India have the same strategic objective to broaden international trade. However,China's main goal is to integrate into the multilateral trade while that of India is to utilize rules of the WTO.In order to achieve this goal,China and India take the balance and alliance strategic model, but India is more active in the alliance model than China. With their participation strategies, the international trade of China and India grows rapidly and these two countries successfully affect the Doha round negotiation process. What's more,China becomes an important member of the multilateral trade system and India becomes the leader of the developing countries in WTO.In G20,China and India share the same strategic objective that they would like to push forward the reform of the international financial system. In addition,China wants to promote its status in global governance while India mainly focuses on the economic development and stability. When participating in the G20,both China and India take the balance and alliance strategic model. However,China plays a more important role in the alliance. As a result,China and India push forward the reform the IMF but China's influence in the G20 is bigger than that of India. In the BRICS,China and India have the objective to raise the status of emerging powers but China hopes to strengthen the economic linkage among emerging economies while India wants to obtain more political gains.India still takes the balance strategic model while China takes the united front model.China and India promote the establishment of the New Development Bank.India achieves more political gains than China through the BRICS because India raises its international status quite obviously. To make a conclusion, both China and India define themselves as emerging powers and developing countries as well. There is one fact China needs to pay attention to that India sometimes balances China. As a whole,China and India prefer balance and alliance model in international economic institutions but India's alliance mode is more flexible and effective than that of China. In the future,China and India still have great chance to cooperate with each other. These two countries should focus on economic development, build mutual trust and unite the developing countries to further safeguard their own national interests.
