With the continuous development of the information and communication revolution and the rapid development of logistics technology since 1980s,the production process has been gradually expanded to the global scope and the global value chain has gradually formed. On the one hand, developing countries can participate in the global value chain using their comparative advantages, learn advanced technology in developed countries and then share the dividends of Globalization. On the other hand, developed countries can get more generous dividends of global division by leading the global value chain, while facing the risk of their own advanced technology being imitated. Therefore, the establishment of the intellectual property protection system, which is suitable for the level of economic development in each country, has become one of the cores of the formation of the foreign competitiveness in the new era. This dissertation focuses on intellectual property protection and the global value chain status.By introducing the intellectual property protection variable into the framework of product specialization(Long et al.,2005),it analyzes the impacts of intellectual property protection on the global value chain status of developing countries and finds a nonlinear relationship between the intellectual property protection and the global value chain status, which means the spillover effect and the competition effect work together and lead to eventual results.Based on the GP Index defined by Ginarte&Park(2007),which reflects the level of nominal intellectual property protection, the dissertation includes the law enforcement level in each countries and intellectual property protection sensitivity of each industry to construct the intellectual property protection index in the country-industry level. In the trade value-added framework used by Want et al.(2013),this dissertation decomposes the bilateral trade flows and calculates the global value chain division index and the global value chain participation index in industry level. In empirical part, this dissertation uses data of 14 manufacturing industries in 35 countries and regions from 1998 to 2011,and proves the industry heterogeneity of intellectual property protection by benchmark model analysis and further analysis in the country-type level or factor-intensity level.Using panel threshold model, its verifies the nonlinear relationship between the intellectual property rights protection and the global value chain status from the three dimensions of trade openness level, global value chain participation level and institutional quality level.Trade openness level and global value chain participation have two thresholds, while institutional quality level has only a single threshold. Finally, according to the factors which influence the specialization of global value chain status and the effects of intellectual property protection, the dissertation puts forward some feasible suggestions on policy-making in China.
