A Study On The Sustainable Livelihood Of Farmers In Remote And Poor Villages

For a long time,the poverty of rural area has been the key issue of Chinese government.In order to solve this problem,a series of policies has been published by them.Policies like the general relief policy at the beginning and the targeted poverty alleviation,which guided by president Xi in nowadays,demonstrated their emphasis on this topic.As the essential requirement of farmers,the sustainable development of livelihood has the significance for the family,the village and even the entire rural area.The research on how to realize the sustainable livelihood of the famers who live in remote and poor areas,and how to utilize the limited resources to improve the famers' life standard is the core issue of this thesis.The research object of this thesis is the farmers from village D that is a remote and poor ethnic area gathered people of Tujia,Miao and Dong.This village is in Wanshan District of Tongren City,Guizhou province that is the important region of poverty reduction.Based on the current conditions of those farmers and taking the DFID sustainable developing frame as the reference,this research analyzed their livelihood by adopting some methodologies like interview and questionnaires.After analyzing the current occupation of their livelihood,and evaluating the measurements that taken for their livelihood risk,this thesis find out that the main reasons lead to the non-sustainable development in this region are the geographical conditions,infrastructures and the education background of people in there.This thesis analyzed the current livelihood and the risk of the farmers from those perspectives: natural capital,material capital,financial capital,human capital and social capital.Moreover,give some suggestions to help them to achieve the sustainable development of their livelihood.The research is focus on the principle of achieving the sustainable development of farmers ' livelihood.In accordance with the logic interpretation,the whole thesis are divided into four parts: First,the author of this thesis make a brief summary on current researches of the topic,and give a clear definition of the poor village and the concept of sustainable development.Then,after evaluating the current situation of village D,this thesis do some survey on the environment andlivelihood capital in there.By analyzing the reasons that caused the non-sustainable issues and some problems faced by the village famers,this thesis described and explored the livelihood risk in village D from the perspective of environment,economy,society and the famers.At last,in view of the current situation of village D,this thesis recommended nine items to help the famers to achieve their sustainable livelihood.They are list as follows: developing the infrastructure in rural areas,and promote the integration of urban and rural trade;developing the local economy by village tourism;promoting the education of local famers and their living skills;publishing relevant preferential policies to encourage migrant workers back to the village employment;training the farmers by some new technologies.Doing some insurance work by relevant departments;following the policy published by governments;paying attention to the inheritance of ethnical culture and the famers' market consciousness.Introducing new agricultural science and technology depends on local conditions.
