The most important reasons for the rise of town of Yangkou are its superior geographical location and convenient water transport conditions.Because of the unrest relationship between East and West in the modern history, the economy of town of Yangkou experienced ups and downs as well. From late Qing Dynasty to 1920s,due to the sharply increased domestic and international market demand for agricultural and forestry resourcesand the development of the newer ship transportation, the town of Yangkou boosted its transportation economy by transporting traditional agriculture and forestry products.Starting from 1930s to 1940s,due to population growth after the victory of the Counter-Japanese War and the expansion of commercial scale,Yangkou's economy was booming, which was the peak of Yangkou's transportation business. However, because ofthe post-war's population emigration to inland, the development of modern land transportation, and Yangkou's single economic development model,Yangkou's transportation economy finally declined. In this paper,we investigated the Shunchang County, town of Yangkou.Combining with the changing East-and-West relationship in the modern history,we studied the vicissitude of the transportation economy in Yangkou. This paper also includes analysis on different drives of Yangkou's transportation economy in two different periods in the modern times.Yangkou is a very important town in the modern history of the upper reaches of Minjiang River.Town of Yangkou is a classic case to study the economic development of the upstream of MinjiangRiver in the modern history.
