The Improvement Of Transportation Infrastructure And Poverty Alleviation: Evidence From China Family Panel Studies

Based on the data from China Family Panel Studies(CFPS),this paper focus the relationship between the improvement of transportation infrastructure and the poverty alleviation.Through summary statistics,we find that there exist heterogeneity within poverty families and the others.These difference can be demonstrated by family structure characteristics and living conditions.Based on multivariate regression models,the research argues that the transportation could exert positive effect on family income.In order to test its robustness,we use family expense to replace family income and find that this relationship still exist.This paper proposes that these family which have terrible road condition,they are more likely to become poverty families.Whether or not the correlation between improvement of transportation infrastructure and poverty alleviation can be taken as causality? We attend this relationship as causality based on the evidence from propensity scores match(PSM).We advocates that mechanism between the transportation infrastructure and the poverty reduction.Basically speaking,the non-agricultural industries mediate the poverty alleviation effect,and then the migration of labor could moderate the relationship.Furthermore,heterogeneity is a basic social rules in social science research,and this research lay its foundation on the heterogeneity hypothesis,we divides total families into three different parts: ordinary family,poverty family whose average family income below 1274 yuan in 2010,and these poverty families whose income in the lowest25% of poverty families.We demonstrates that the improvement of transportation infrastructure and development of non-agriculture sectors have limited effect to these 25%family,whereas the migration of family labor can influence total income significantly.And this finding can be taken as a proof to precise poverty alleviation for that different poverty family need diversify poverty alleviation approach.This research suggests that it is of great importance to improve the conditions of roads and at the same time,precise poverty alleviation approach are also needed.
