The forest area in Inner Mongolia ranks first in China, and it is also one of the three major snow distribution areas. The low-temperature ice and snow disasters occur from time to time, which seriously affect the sustainable development of the forest area and the national ecological security. This paper takes the snow cover in Inner Mongolia as the research object.Through the extraction and processing of MODIS snow cover image data, the temporal and spatial distribution of snow cover over many years in Inner Mongolia is analyzed, and natural disaster risk models are used to establish the snow disaster in Inner Mongolia. The evaluation index system assesses and categorizes the risk of forest snow disasters. The main conclusions are as follows:(1)In Inner Mongolia, the snow-covered area, snow cover rate, and snow depth over time from 2001 to 2016 showed a trend of increasing first and then decreasing, and both peaked in 2006.The period of snow accumulation lasted from October to April, and the area of snow covered by the whole area showed a unimodal distribution pattern, which peaked in January of the following year. The variability of snow distribution in the eastern part of Inner Mongolia is lower than that in the western part of the country.(2)According to snow depth,Inner Mongolia is divided into three snow distribution areas. The low value areas include Alashan,Wuhai,Bayannaoer League, western Wulanchabu and southwestern Ordos. The median area is mainly in Tongliao City,Chifeng City,Xilin Gol League,Ulanqab City,Ordos City,Western Alxa League and West Hulunbeier City. The central and eastern parts of Hulunbeier, the Xingan League and the Xilin Gol League are high-value areas in the northwest.(3)The areas with high risk of snowstorms and secondary high-risk areas in forests in Inner Mongolia accounted for 77.23% of the total forest snow disaster risk areas, and were mainly located in Hulunbeier in the northeastern part of Inner Mongolia. The total area of these areas accounted for 94.70% of all graded risk areas in Hulunbeir. The medium-risk area accounted for 11.64% of the region's forest snow disaster risk areas, mainly in Xilin Gol League,Hulunbeier,Chifeng City, and Xing'an League. The medium-risk areas in the four areas accounted for 0.61%,36.50%,and9.11% and 5.99% of the total area of the medium-risk areas respectively.Sub-low-risk areas and low-risk areas accounted for 16.76% of all forest snow disaster risk areas, mainly located in Alxa League,Ordos City,Xing'an League and other places. The results of the zoning basically coincided with the statistical data of snow in forest in Inner Mongolia and had high reliability.
