Research On China's Provincial Energy Efficiency And Its Influencing Factors

From Reform and Opening up at 40 years ago,China's economy has grown rapidly,which is an unprecedented miracle in human history.However,with the rapid economic growth,China's energy consumption has begun to rise sharply,leading to China's increasing dependence on overseas energy and deterioration of the ecological environment.In this context,it is necessary to research China's provincial energy efficiency and its influencing factors,which can help find the differences in energy efficiency between China's provinces and analyze the improvement potential of energy efficiency.Also,the targeted suggestions can be provided for China to maintain sustainable economic growth.Taking China's 30 provinces,municipalities and autonomous regions(excluding Tibet)as the research object,this paper applies the direction distance function model including undesirable outputs(in Data Envelopment Analysis)to measure China' provincial energy efficiency from 2000 to 2016.The research shows that China's overall energy efficiency is presented the trend of declining year by year totally,and the energy efficiency gap between the eastern region and the central and western region has expanded.In terms of the improvement potential of energy efficiency,the management potential in the eastern region is relatively large,while the technology potential in the central and western region is relatively large.In addition,this paper tests the spatial correlation of energy efficiency and analyzes its influencing factors by Spatial Durbin Model.The research reflects that:(1)China's provincial energy efficiency has significant spatial correlation,showing spatial dependence and spatial agglomeration;(2)there is an "inverted U-shaped" relationship between the urbanization rate and energy efficiency.The improvement of the economic development level and industrial structure have a positive effect on local region's energy efficiency significantly,while the improvement of opening up level has a significant negative effect on the local region's energy efficiency.Finally,in view of the theoretical and empirical analysis,this paper proposes some corresponding suggestions.(1)fully tap the technology and management potential of energy efficiency depending on local conditions;(2)improve the level and quality of urbanization,promote coordinated regional development to play the agglomeration effect;(3)deepen the reform of industrial structure and promote the green development of industry;(4)raise the threshold of business invitation and investment attraction,and improve the quality of foreign investment.
