| Experience in green and healthy buildings was accumulated during the construction of traditional vernacular houses. The long-time and gradually-refined experience, which responds to the local climate, could provide valuable references for modern designs of green and healthy buildings.Canton is located in the hot-humid area of south China.Local vernacular houses were designed to adapt to the hot-humid climate. How to study the climate adaptability strategies of Canton vernacular houses in a more efficient way? What are those strategies and principles? These are the two key questions that the study is going to solve. The study utilizes parametric models and multiple simulation tools to study the climate adaptability strategies of Canton vernacular houses based on multi samples, whole factors and integrated performances.Firstly, logic of parametric modelling, design factors and performance indices was concluded from construction rules of Canton vernacular houses.Secondly, research platforms were established based on parametric design platform Grasshopper, simulation toolkit Ladybug tools and Python scripts.Thirdly, sensitivity analysis of design factors was conducted to select key design factors in terms of climate adaptability.Single and multi objective optimization of performance indices was conducted to obtain the optimized solution sets.Representative samples were selected to analyze the spatio-temporal distributions of thermal comfort, condensation and daylighting. Finally, climate adaptability strategies of Canton vernacular houses were concluded. In order to achieve improvements of performance indices, key design factors selected through sensitivity analysis should be focused on and values of key design factors should be determined by single or multiple objective optimization. For example,in order to achieve improvements of thermal comfort in Sanjianlianglang, cornice height, orientation, hall depth, roof construction and window-to-wall ratio should be mainly considered.Cornice height should be a middle value.60° east of north to 30° east of south and 45° south of west to 75° south of west are two ranges of optimized orientation.Hall depth should be minimal.Sixth-or seventh-fold tile are the suggested roof construction Window-to-wall ratio should be minimal. The study finally presents the values of optimized solution sets for all objectives. Results showed that 1.91% to 174% of improvements of performance indices could be achieved through optimizations of key design factors, and climate adaptability of Canton vernacular houses was enhanced efficiently.Research methods and platforms proposed by the study could help improved the studies of climate adaptability of traditional vernacular houses. Results could be quantity references to inherit traditional climate adaptability strategies. |
