As global temperature continues to rise, greenhouse gas emission has become an important threat to human survival. The development of urbanization in various provinces is not balanced in China, and the corresponding carbon emission also has large regional difference. There are many studies about the relationship of urbanization and carbon emission in the existing literature, but they are all based on population urbanization.Few scholars have studied the impact of urbanization on carbon emission from other dimensions.Based on the above, this thesis selects the relevant data of carbon emission from 1995 to 2015 in 30 provinces of China.Using STIRPAT model, the influences of population urbanization and economic urbanization on carbon emission across the country and sub-regional are studied. Finally,Based on time-series data of each province, the thesis studies the the influences of population urbanization and economic urbanization on carbon emission according to the different elasticity of carbon emission affected by economic development in each province. The results of the analysis show that:(1)In a nationwide scale, population urbanization has a significant positive impact on carbon emission and economic urbanization has a significant negative impact on carbon emission.(2)In the developed areas, the increase of economic urbanization will reduce carbon emission; In the relatively developed areas, the increase of population urbanization will increase carbon emission, and the increase of economic urbanization will reduce carbon emission; In the less developed areas, the increase of population urbanization will reduce carbon emission.(3)In the areas where population urbanization is low,the increase of population urbanization will reduce carbon emission;while in the areas with high and low population urbanization, economic urbanization will have a significant negative impact on carbon emission.(4)With the decrease of economic urbanization, the positive impact of population urbanization on carbon emission and the negative impact of economic urbanization on carbon emission gradually increase.(5)In the regions where economic development does not have a significant impact on carbon emission, population urbanization and economic urbanization have a significant positive impact on carbon emission; In the areas where economic development has a relatively smaller impact on carbon emission, population urbanization has a significant positive impact on carbon emission, while economicurbanization has a significant negative impact on carbon emission.Reducing carbon emission without affecting economic development is an issue that Chinese government needs to solve urgently.Due to the large differences of urbanization and economic development in various provinces in China, the effects of population urbanization and economic urbanization on carbon emission are also different. Results of the research in this thesis are helpful to formulate relevant policies and control the speed of population urbanization and economic urbanization.
