Since 1978,China’s reform and opening up,it has been more than 40 years since then.China’s economic growth rate has been sustained and rapid growth. It has changed from less developed countries in the early stage of development to middle-income countries, and is moving up to middle-income countries. With the rapid development of economy, environmental pollution is also called a serious practical problem. To a certain extent, environmental pollution has not only become an obstacle to further economic growth, but also a serious social and political problem. It is a roadblock that must be removed on the road of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Therefore, the central government clearly put forward the policy idea that "green mountains are golden mountains and silver mountains".At the same time,in the process of economic development, serious unequal income distribution has also become a serious social and political problem. What is the relationship between them?Although it can be observed in real life that areas with large gap between the rich and the poor are often areas with serious environmental pollution, the theoretical and empirical validity is only an isolated superficial phenomenon. The understanding of this issue is not only of theoretical significance, but also of reference significance to the choice of development path.Firstly, this paper combs the relevant literature about the relationship between income gap and environmental pollution at home and abroad.Secondly, based on the existing statistical data in China,it describes the degree of income inequality and the status quo of environmental pollution in China, and makes a more intuitive analysis of the relationship between them. Then,a game model of income inequality affecting environmental pollution is established, which proves theoretically that income inequality may indeed lead to environmental pollution problems. Finally, income inequality is measured by Gini coefficient of residents’ income, and environmental pollution is measured by sulfur dioxide emission and chemical oxygen demand(COD)emission.OLS,panel model and dynamic panel model are used to verify the reality. The empirical test confirms the proposition put forward in the theoretical analysis, and finds that the expansion of income gap in China will indeed significantly expand pollution emissions. This paper further studies the realization mechanism of income gap aggravating environmental pollution, and finds that the expansion of income gap can increase pollutant emissions by reducing the intensity of environmental regulation(investmentin pollution control per unit area of gross domestic product). The research methods and results of this paper can provide theoretical support for the government’s income regulation policy, environmental governance policy and industrial planning policy.
