Up-flow anaerobic sludge bed(UASB),is a bioreactor device,can be used to generate biogas from organic raw materials and rich-carbohydrate substrates.UASB reactor has been widely utilized to generate hydrogen from various substrates.It has been known for its low energy demand,ability to generate methane-rich biogas as a recoverable energy source,and lower sludge production.It has also been successfully applied to treat various types of wastewater.UASB was known as the most robust high-rate anaerobic reactors,and almost 1000 reactors are widely installed.UASB is a reactor that is operationally stable and process efficient.Sugarcane wastewater has been used as a substrate to generate hydrogen.Hydrogen yields,pH,hydraulic retention time(HRT),COD,and substrates concentration are primary parameters that are investigated in this study.The substrate concentration was designed at increase mode 1.33 gr/L,1.78 gr/L,2.22 gr/L,4 gr/L,and 8 gr/L,respectively.pH UASB and effluent fluctuated during operating time.HRT was designed at decrease mode 24 h,12 h,7 h,and 4 h,respectively.During 79 days of the operation time,the total gas yields can be obtained 8 m3.The hydrogen yields increase along with the increase of substrate concentrations.However,hydrogen production in this study was lower than those in other studies.During the operation time,the lowest COD removal rate was obtained at 0.78%,and the highest value was 90.25%.Substrate concentration affects significantly to the hydrogen production.Hydrogen production increases along with the increase of substrate concentrations.pH is also affected by substrate concentrations.The comparative study concerning the utilization of UASB to treat simple sugars(monosaccharides),complex sugars(disaccharides),and polysaccharides are also presented.Hydrogen,carbon dioxide,and methane are types of gases primarily generated by the UASB reactor either single-stage or two-stage.Acetic acid,butyric acid,propionic acid,isovaleric acid,and valeric acid are soluble metabolic products primarily generated by simple sugars(monosaccharides),complex sugars(disaccharides),and polysaccharides wastewater.UASB reactor is a promising reactor to generate biogas,mainly hydrogen.However,more research is necessary to optimize UASB performance,particularly in terms of enhancing hydrogen production.This will make the UASB reactor more attractive as the preferred system for hydrogen production.
