Economic growth, ecological environment and population are the three main themes of future development. In this paper,73 cities(except Lhasa)that implemented the new air quality standards in the first stage were taken as the research object. The adjusted STIRPAT model was used to analyze the relationships between the economic growth,year-end population and the concentrations of SO2,NO2 and PM10 of these cities from 2009 to 2017.The results showed that: Firstly, for different pollutants, the correlation between economic growth and environmental pollution is different. There is an "N" curve relationship between economic growth and SO2 concentration,an inverted "U" curve relationship between economic growth and NO2 concentration that conforms to the kuznetz curve of the environment, and a negative linear relationship between economic growth and PM10 concentration.Urban population size and population agglomeration degree have an inverted "U" curve relationship on population for SO2 concentration and PM10 concentration. There is an inverted "U" curve relationship between urban population size and population agglomeration degree on NO2 concentration, but the results of population density and NO2 concentration are not significant.Secondly, economic growth takes population size as a moderator variable, and the expansion of population size weakens the impact of economic growth on environmental pollution. Therefore,it is necessary to correctly understand the relationship between economic growth, urban population and environmental pollution, and make reasonable plans for urban development to realize the sustainable development of the three.
