Urban land use patterns reflect urban development features in a certain stage. In the past two or three decades of China, the rapid economic growth greatly promoted the urbanization and city expansion. Thus, problems such as land extensive use, arable land reduction, ecological damage and occurred, which restricted the implementation of sustainable development. So,land intensive use is an inevitable choice. The compact city theory, which originated in Europe, advocates curbing urban sprawl and saving energy by high-density layout, land mixing use and public transport pilot. This theory indicates the direction to control urban sprawl for the European countries, but also conforms to China's urban development requirements. This paper combines the compact city with urban land intensive use,and explores the connotation of urban land intensive use under the guidance of compact city.On basis of that, this paper evaluates Changsha's urban land intensive use degree in the past five years. The main content of this paper consists of three parts:Part one is theoretical exploration of compact city and urban land intensive use.It interprets these two theories, and compares their similarities and differences. Then,it analyzes the mechanism of effect of compact city on urban land intensive use.And on basis of this, the connotation of urban land intensive use is re-recognized.Part two is an evaluation for Changsha's degree of intensive urban land use.Starting from connotation reading,it builds an evaluation index system, and makes up an evaluation methodology by Function Method,Entropy Method and Comprehensive Evaluation Method. It evaluates the urban land intensive use degree of Changsha from 2009 to 2013,and points out several problems such as significant land expansion trends, unreasonable land use structure and layout, lower environmental benefits, hysteretic infrastructure and etc.Part three is to explore optimization approaches of Changsha urban land use.Based on the evaluation results and issue analysis,it puts forward six suggestions, which concludes changing land development mode, land layout optimization relying on public transportation, adjusting land use structure, environment protection, urban environmental remediation and establishing and improving relevant laws and policies.
