With the continuous development of modern cities, the scale of the city shows the trend of rapid expansion. The traditional traffic light control system can not meet the pace of urban development, and its drawbacks are constantly emerging. In particular, traffic lights can not be adjusted at any time according to the traffic flow, but simply by the way of fixed time control.Based on the basic theory of traffic engineering as the support,in view of a typical small city area traffic situation,A traffic light control system is simulated in this paper. The system uses the traffic detection data of infrared detector, and use AT89C51 microcontroller as the experimental tool.According to the actual situation, the system can automatically judge the traffic situation, and it is reflected in the logic control of traffic lights.About hardware design, due to traffic in different periods have obvious gap, peak and low peak period is prominent, the clock control program as the system time clues, this paper gives the circuit design, and with the help of the output side of the AT89C51 MCU and the bus directly connected to the way of controlling the display dot matrix.About software design, taking full account of the control of the cycle phase in the peak period, this paper uses the queuing algorithm to alleviate the length of vehicle queue. At the same time, with the increase of the number of vehicles in the signal cycle, phase release time can be increased. Therefore,it can increase in the peak phase of the vehicle through the number of units from the overall. In this paper, the above methods are programmed using Protues simulation software, and the simulation results are given. The simulation results show that the multi mode control method of traffic lights in this paper is verified.
