With the continuous development of economic globalization and the deepening of reform and opening-up,mechanical,electrical and plumbing(MEP)design which is a branch of architectural design industry has been growing rapidly. While in western countries, especially the architectural and MEP design of the occident has been emulated by domestic designers. However, the mechanical, electrical and plumbing design standards provided by foreign high-star hotel management companies basically are English versions, and which is undoubtedly a huge challenge for those designers whose English is relatively poor.A lot of pure English terminology is prohibitive, but the importance of following the design standards is evident. In order to solve such contradictions and conflicts, professional translators will be required to complete the translation of such standards before the designers' professional work.In this way, various kinds of requirements from Party A and the hotel management companies can be satisfied. In addition, the quality of translation of such design standards has direct and fundamental impact on the quality of the designers' work, thus the related translation practice is of great importance.MEP professional English texts have features of accuracy, conciseness, and standardization.Besides,MEP terminology which is different from common language has its own peculiar textual characteristics. In order to make better understandings and comply with the design standards of foreign hotel management companies for the domestic designers and finally apply in their work,high-quality translation of MEP terminology is necessary. In a word,it will be not easy to convey the design requirements of the high-star hotel management companies accurately as well as in line with Chinese expressions and syntactic structures.Eugene Albert Nida,a well-known American linguist, created the theory of dynamic equivalence. It highly emphasized the fit between target language and source language which will provide great guidance for the translation practice of MEP terminology.According to the concept of dynamic equivalence proposed by Nida,it not only requires the translation to reproduce the source language message as completely as possible in different linguistic structures but also keeping the translators from freeing themselves immoderately. The report will use Nida's dynamic equivalence concept for reference and according to the author's translation practice of Four Seasons Design Standards-MEP ?SPECIALTY SYSTEMS as well as the difficulties encountered in the translation process to make research and discussion of English terminology translation in the design standards. In the meanwhile, the report will summarize relevant translation strategies and methods so that the practitioners may have a better understanding of professional translation and wish them could achieve certain practical guidance.Four Seasons Design Standards-MEP+ Specialty Systems has complete requirements and standards for mechanical, electrical and plumbing and other specialty systems design from Four Seasons Hotel. The design standard was updated in 2015,and the author had the honor to participate in the project with the professional MEP designers and doing the translation work of the standards before starting their MEP design. The translation practice mentioned in the report is mainly based on this work. The report falls into four chapters. The first chapter introduces the research background of the MEP terminology translation, the brief description of translation task as well as the significance of the study on the MEP terminology translation. The second chapter goes to explain the process of translation practice, including the preparatory work before the translation, some of the practical difficulties encountered in the translating process and also some work after the completion of the translation practice.Besides,it focuses on the introduction and explanation of Nida's concept of equivalence which is the theoretical basis of translation. It also explains the principles shall be followed in the terminology translation. In the third part, the author will discuss and summarize the translation strategies used in the practical translation of MEP terminology, and making a comparative analysis and comparison,so as to combine form equivalence with dynamic equivalence. In addition, the report pays more attention to the use of dynamic equivalence concept to grasp the appropriate degree of equality. Finally in the last chapter,it is the conclusion and summary of the whole report. It is proposed that MEP terminology translation pays more emphasis on dynamic equivalence, which requires not only accurate expression of target language but also the role and effect played by the source language.Through the analysis and discussion of the translation practice in the report,it is found that the exactness, equivalence and simplicity of MEP terminology translation is necessary, which demands the translators to have not only a good command of both English and Chinese expression but also certain knowledge of MEP majors.During the process of MEP terminology translation, the translator is supposed to carefully analyze the source text, closely adhere to the requirements of the task, select appropriate expressions which are familiar by target readers and only in this way it will realize the effect of equivalence between target text and source text finally.
