Internal combustion engine is world-widely used as a propulsion system. As one of the key components of the engine, piston rings undergo more severe thermal and mechanical loadings, which have a significant influence on performances of the whole engine.More extensive research works have been carried out so as to ensure superior statues of engine.Aiming this, various techniques, such as CAD,have been employed to facilitate the design of the modern piston rings. In our project,FEM has been conducted as an analytical tool to investigate the strength and thermal situations of the piston rings in a diesel engine.Based on JAVA language platform,a computational program system with friend interfaces has been developed using APDL language,a parametric design language in ANSYS software,to overcome some shortcomings of ANSYS,such as unfriendly interface and complexity of operating, and improve simulation efficiency. To simplified operation process, some complex analytical steps of ANSYS,including parametric geometry construction, grid meshing, boundary conditions imposing, computational setting and post-processing of results, have been designed to run in background.Hence,it's easier for engineers to perform a FEM analysis of piston ring using this analysis program system. In addition,a number of command stream file templates for thermal and strength analysis of different types of piston ring are saved in certain template library for purpose of quick loading of various command stream file templates according to ring specification and analysis type. The templates library are capable to be expanded for extra one.In this paper, the theories of strength, thermal and FEM have been presented in detail firstly. Then, based on JAVA platform,an analysis program system with friend interfaces have been developed using a parametric design language-APDL to perform FEM strength and thermal calculation of piston ring conveniently. Finally, validation of this analysis program system has been introduced in comparison with experimental results to confirm reliability of the result, illustrate friend interface and simple operating steps of this system.Meanwhile, the analysis efficiency has been dramatically improved by using this program system.
