The substations are very important component of the electrical power generation,transmission and distribution systems.The performance of the substations will intensively affect the safety and the stability of the power system.Substation automation system(SAS)for monitoring and protecting equiments of the substation can be designed with advanced computer techniques,electronic techniques,communication techniques and signal process techniques.Adopting the SAS for the substation,the safety and stability of substation operation will be increased,the costs of the operation and maintenance of the substation will be decreased.In this paper,the performance evaluation method of the SAS network architectures and the method for reconstructing SAS are proposed.Firstly,the functions and fundamental network architectures of the SAS are discussed.The performance of the typical types of network architectures for SAS is qualitatively analyzed.Secondly,the reliability block diagrams for evaluating the SAS are developed.The mathematic models for reliability calculation of the SAS network architectures using the minimal cut set algorithm are presented.Reliability comparison for different kinds of the SAS network architectures is performed quantitatively.It is important to determine the sensitivity of the results to variations in the input data.The availabilities of SAS components are varied and their effects on the availability of all architectures are determined.The importance of the task performed by each type of component on the functionality of the SAS is measured.Finally,the reconstruction scheme of the network architecture for a substation SAS is proposed.The deployment and functions of main components of SAS,communication management equipment,and supervisor monitoring and controlling system,are analyzed in detail.
