Since the mid-20 th century, protection of the world's cultural heritages has been emphasized around the world, and related protection regulations and evaluation systems have been gradually perfected. As typical representatives of China's rural settlements, ancient villages in Southern Anhui draw a widespread attention especially when Villages Xidi and Hongcun were included in the World Heritage List in 1999.Relevant agencies have formulated some regulations and measures, but protection of the ancient villages in Southern Anhui didn't live up to expectations. For example, attention has not been sufficiently devoted to protection of "street and lane space" in the ancient villages, and many problems are caused largely due to a lack of an evaluation system for the protection and renovation of the street and lane space.Compared with specific cultural heritages such as residential buildings, the "street and lane space" also has rich historical and cultural elements, allowing people to sense various feelings, especially visual perception. In view of the above, establishment of a reliable and accurate evaluation system based on the study of street and lane space is of great significance for the overall protection and renovation planning of the street and lane space in the ancient villages.Based on the literature researches on relevant street and lane space theories and landscape environmental assessments at home and abroad, and in combination with the current landscape evaluation system, this paper aims to construct a visual assessment model of street and lane space in the ancient villages in Southern Anhui by using the analytic hierarchy process and the questionnaire survey method. The evaluation model is applied to the field study of street and lane space of seven ancient villages in Southern Anhui, and protection and development strategies are proposed to resolve the reflected problems.Furthermore, weighting results of evaluation indexes and actual evaluation results of the street and lane space in the ancient villages in Southern Anhui are summarized theoretically, and improvements in evaluation index selection and assessment methods are provided. This paper aims to provide factual basis for the protection of the ancient villages in Southern Anhui and provide useful references for renovation of the street and lane space.
