The metro projects usually require a large capital investment and a long implementation period.Moreover,it is difficult to make any changes,including route alignment and stations,once the project is completed,and the built metro route will affect the operation efficiency and social economy benefits for a long time.Therefore,the planning and decisions of route and stations are particularly important.The planning of metro routes and station sites heavily relies on the experience of transport planners,and very often a scientific,systematic and robust planning method is absent.In order to avoid investment waste and reduce construction risks while ensuring the social benefits of the metro.In this paper,three mathematical models were established for metro route planning problem with the goal of maximizing investment efficiency,which was to maximize the population served per unit capital investment,maximize the resident trips served per unit capital investment or maximize the number of Point of Interest served per unit capital investment,separately,subjected to a number of constraints including metro station spacing,line geometrics,financial resources and total length,etc.The depth-first search(DFS)algorithm was developed and implemented using the MATLAB programming in this paper,and the city of Luoyang in China was taken for the case study.The population and resident trips were collected during the implementation of the Bus Rapid Transit Planning Project in Luoyang,and the number of Point of Interest was acquired by data mining technology.We can obtain multiple feasible route solutions that meet the constraints after the calculating,and select the optimal solution by investment efficiency under the condition of different sites number.Finally,the numerical results are compared with the investment efficiency of Luoyang Metro Line I and BRT.The numerical results prove that the proposed method in this paper can solve the metro route planning problem effectively,and obtain the optimal solution.Also,it can improve the current status of the empirical method in metro route planning project,which was based on the multi-scheme comparison and the fourstage model for passenger flow analysis.Besides,the method is applicable to any city and can be a reference for planners and decision makers.Meanwhile,for those public-private partnership metro projects,the method will be very useful to analyze their financial prospects.
