Taijiang County, located in Guizhou Province,is famed for its high density population of Miao ethnic people. The local Miao ethnic people kept their agricultural civilization in mountainous areas and their traditional faith on nature.Mountainside living of thousands of years isolated Miao ethnic people from the invention of other culture. Therefore, they kept independent convention of living, farming, eating, clothing and performing. As one of the typical dwellings, stilted buildings is the greatest treasure of vernacular architectures in southwestern area of China.During thousands of years living in the mountainous area in Guizhou Province,Miao ethnic people made numerous methodologies to adapt to the nature, and the stilted buildings, reforming the terrains with lifted pillars,is one of their greatest inventions. However, with the changing of production modes and life styles, more and more Miao ethnic people didn’t live in the wooden stilted houses and built brick ones instead. Some of families even moved out of the mountainous areas and adapted to the modern urban lives.Stilted houses seemed to lose their stage and were disappearing in Miao ethnic culture. But the value of stilted houses in regional architecture needs to be defined, and the artistry of building them with modern methods should be advanced. From the standpoint of cross-culture,the author started the investigation on stilted houses in Guizhou Province.Based on the researches, the author focused on planning the public space in Hongyang Miao village and designing a group of cultural infrastructures for the locals. This article includes the following four parts: 1)preparing the research based on regional architecture theory and vernacular architecture case study;2)focusing on the ‘regional’ and ‘ethnic’ characters of Miao villages and stilted houses;3)summarizing the paradigms of planning of mountainside villages and construction of stilted houses;4)proposing the design project of public space and cultural infrastructures in Miao village, based on the local’s daily demands. The planning of traditional villages and methodology of stilted buildings presents the wisdom of Miao ancestors: the devotion of labor, the respect for nature and the faith in Miao deities. The author hopes to contribute to the researches of vernacular architecture in southwestern area of China,by studying stilted buildings under the broadened cultural background concerning ethnic history, mysterious tales, agricultural lifestyles, traditional festivals and exquisite performances.
