Since the beginning of the 21 st century, with the continuous development of our country's economy, the port has been playing an important role in economic development as it has become an important hub for transportation and its strategic position has become increasingly prominent. The port is the link between one region and the outside of it.The development of the port will drive the development of the hinterland economy and create conditions for the economic development of the hinterland. At the same time, the improvement of the hinterland economy and transportation network system and the increasing development of science and technology have also provided sound transportation, sufficient funds and technical support for the development of the port industries, leading to the development of the port economy.Shanghai Port is the world's largest port in terms of container throughput and cargo throughput. It is China's largest cargo distribution center and gathering place. And Shanghai Port is located in the Yangtze River Delta region, which is China's most economically developed region, and holds an important position in the country's economic and social development. In particular, under the background of the emerging of free trade areas in various regions, studies will be made on how the economic development of Shanghai Port and the hinterland will interact,by which will clarify the mechanism of the interaction. On the one hand, this interactive development mechanism provides views to the interactive development of Shanghai and its hinterland. On the other hand,it also provides relevant reference and valuable suggestions for the economic development of other ports and hinterlands. This article first reviews relevant literature both at home and abroad and untangles it from various aspects.Second,it introduces the related concepts of port economy and hinterland economy and the method of dividing the range of hinterland economic. The theoretical support for the empirical research mainly relying on the theory of harbor location, the theory of growth pole, the center-periphery and the port-city interaction theory. Then it summarizes the interaction between the port economy and the hinterland economy.Based on this, combined with the overview of Shanghai Port and the hinterland, the development history of Shanghai Port is analyzed through the indicators of cargo throughput and container throughput. At the same time, the hinterland economy development is explored through indicators such as regional GDP,added value of secondary and tertiary industries, and total import and export volume, which provides the basis for the following empirical analysis.Secondly, the VAR model is introduced in this paper, and relevant indicators are explained and illustrated. The empirical analysis of the interaction between the development of Shanghai Port and the hinterland economy is carried out using the cointegration throry, impulse response analysis methods, variance decomposition and other econometric methods. The results of empirical analysis are as follows: The development of Shanghai Port has a weak pulling effect on the hinterland economy, and the hinterland economy has a significant pulling effect on the development of Shanghai Port. Finally, based on the results of the above empirical research,in order to promote the development of the port economy, thus driving the growth of the hinterland economy, and improving the interaction between the port economy and the hinterland economy,we propose relevant countermeasures and suggestions as follows: increase the development of the port industry, and establish a linked development mechanism between the port and the hinterland's economic industry;the port logistics development mechanism need to be perfected to drive the development of the hinterland economy;the orientation of the port's function should be defined to achieve the port competition and cooperation;improve the transportation system, and accelerate the construction of the collection and transportation system for the port and the hinterland.
