Communication network as the core of distribution automation system,is an important part of the construction process. The safety and reliability of the communication network determines the stability of the distribution automation system.Communication methods commonly used in distribution automation systems include optical fiber, power carrier and cellular network. How to flexibly use various communication methods in distribution automation system communication networking, that meet the needs of all levels is gradually becoming a research hotspot. This article taking Wuxi as design background, starts with the working principle of distribution automation system, describes the application of communication system detailedly, lists the applicable scope of several communication methods.According to the status and reliability requirements of the distribution network in Xishan economic development zone, the construction area is divided into the core area and the general area.Comprehensive considerations from economy, reliability and safety,a set of communication network design for distribution automation in Wuxi is proposed to verify the feasibility of fiber networking and cellular networking. The article takes the project of a 10 kV line in Xishan economic development zone as an example, tested the construction design of the communication network and verified the technical feasibility and practicality.During the actual operation of the distribution automation system in Wuxi, there are several deficiencies. An improved solution using 4G LTE technology is proposed to provide construction ideas for large-scale development of distribution automation system in other areas of Wuxi in the future.
