The intensification of the urbanization process has promoted the rapid flow of population. With the continuous expansion of the enrollment scale, schools in most urban centers are facing the problem of insufficient land use.As an important force of vocational education in our country, secondary vocational schools have developed in recent years, occupying half of the education in high school. With the continuous expansion of the campus scale, the traditional campus layout has been unable to meet the needs of rapidly growing students.Under the background of the compact development of our urban cities, how to effectively use campus space within the limited land use is an important issue in the design of secondary vocational schools at this stage. This article relies on Xuanwu Vocational School Planning and Design Project in Nanjing to explore the design of secondary vocational schools under the background of urban compact development.First of all, through the case study of secondary vocational schools in the downtown area of Nanjing, the author compares the land area, floor area ratio and the surrounding environment, and the use of functional space and public space in 7 secondary vocational schools. The other information summarizes the problems faced by secondary vocational schools in the period of appearance and analyzes the main points of planning and design of secondary vocational schools based on the theory of urban compaction.Based on the status quo and theory, the strategies for the planning and design of secondary vocational schools under the background of compactness are proposed in three aspects: general layout, spatial three-dimensional development, and flexible organization of internal teaching space. In the general layout, the intensive development of space under the compact background was discussed from the aspects of sharing resources with cities, integrating functional zoning, and integrating spatial forms. In the process of spatial three-dimensional development, three aspects, namely, the rational use of underground space above ground, stratified traffic organization, and the three-dimensional development of public activities, were discussed to explore the possibility of vertical space development. In the flexible organization of internal teaching space, the strategy of efficient and flexible use of indoor space was discussed from the aspects of the integration of teaching and training and the change of spatial flexibility of indoor teaching.
