| The road has been an important skeleton of the city since ancient times, and the planning of road system has always been the core of urban planning. The narrow understanding of the road is a linear traffic space.Broadly speaking,it is a complex space integrating social, political, economic, and cultural functions, completely recording the historical trajectory of urban spatial changes. In order to explore the process of urban planning and construction in modern China and uncover the cultural conflicts and implicit logic of development in the spatial pattern, this research focus on the evolution of road space in city of Hankou which has transferred from a traditional commercial town to modern international business in early-modern times.Firstly, this article analyzes the historical evolution of the road terms and verifies the meaning and use of each period through data.It is found that in ancient China, streets and lanes were the main road terms. After the modern construction of maloo, the terms of avenue and road became popular.Road construction wasn’t only the main strategy for revitalizing the economy, but also an important measure for the reform of the municipal government.Based on this, the stage division of the road space evolution is proposed, that is,the period of street and lane system, the period of maloo system, the period of the avenue system. In the ancient times, streets and lanes stretched along the Han river, and Hanzheng Street was the main space axis expanding along the east-west direction. And most lanes were perpendicular to the river extending in the north-south direction. After the opening up,Hankou entered the construction phase of maloo system.Influenced by the Western urban construction theories and technology, the western road began to appear in Hankou. The road network has also shifted towards the Yangtze River. To a certain extent, the maloo system is the continuation of the street and lane pattern. With the opening of the Beijing-Hankou Railway, the expansion of the road space gradually spread along the road instead of the water. After the establishment of Hankou city, the government tried to make planning in light of local conditions, while modernizing and widening the streets of old districts. Thus the road combined the block structure in the outer with streets and lanes inside, and the modern road system of Hankou was basically formed. The intrinsic mechanism of its evolution is summed up.The natural environment interwoven with rivers and lakes is the basis for its evolution.Construction technology and state power are important influencing factors. The road space is the physical presentation of social development and technological progress,as well as a carrier of modern state ideology. In addition, the inertia of traditional culture and the strong embedding of Western culture also have an important influence on the development of the road space. These influencing factors work together to influence each other and promote the evolution and formation of Hankou road space in modern times. In conclusion, the evolution of Hankou road space in modern times is continuous and gradual. The street and lane times were greatly influenced by natural factors. The main influence of the road period came from the construction technology and transportation technology of cities in the West. There are more political policies factors that worked during the avenue period. The protection of road space should be strengthened in today`s Hankou. The road space can be part of Hankou’s material cultural heritage. |
