With the rapid pace of modern life, people are so occupied with various kinds of work that they do not have enough time to do any physical activities. It has been recognized that lack of physical activity is responsible for public health issue. On the other hand, the improvement of the built environment(land use, spatial form, green space and open space, etc.)has been considered as an efficient way for increasing physical activity of residents.Science community in western countries has conducted a large number of empirical research to explore the impact the built environment on physical activity, which has formed complete theoretical system and practical experience. In contrast, the study on public health in the field of urban planning is still in the start-up stage, especially lacking empirical study in case of small cities. As the government has paid more attention to public health,it is becoming a topic issue that creating more livable built environment for promoting physical activity. The study utilize quantitative mode to explore factors of built environment that has an impact on physical activity,in case of Ganyu,Jiangsu Province.First, the paper introduces the definition and concepts of objective and subjective built environment, physical activity, then does the literature review of the impact of built environment on physical activity in detail, which has form the basic foundation of the research. In the empirical study of Ganyu, the physical activity is classified into two parts:traffic physical activity and leisure physical activity, and the Multinomial Logit Modal and Ordinal Logit Modal are utilized respectively to explore how the objective built environment(Residential density,Land mixing degree,Density of commercial facilities,Accessibility of green space,Connectivity of streets)and subjective built environment(Community environmental quality,Safety,Convenience)exert an impact on traffic and leisure physical activity of residents. For each group, which is classified on the basis of difference between the residents’ travel preference and the built environment, further study and comparison will be made to explore the different influential mechanism of the subjective and objective built environment on individual’s physical activity. Results show that 1)Built environment only has an impact on specific groups. For those who love sports, the objective environment would impact their physical activity statistically, for those who do not love sports, the objective environment would not influence their leisure physical activity.2)Subjective built environment does have impacts on leisure physical activity but do not have any impacts on traffic physical activity statistically.3)Some parts of built environment(Density of commercial facilities,Accessibility of green space,Connectivity of streets)is highly correlated with the type and density of the physical activity. The above analysis has clarified the influential mechanism of the subjective and objective built environment on physical activity of residents, which provides scientific basis for the urban planning that aims at promoting individual’s physical activity. To be specific, the improvement of built environment is effective when residents love doing physical activity. Therefore, government should strengthen the health consciousness of the residents in the policy and then create livable environments for promoting physical activity of residents.Meanwhile, government should pay more attention to residential satisfaction degree for the environment when carrying out urban construction. The whole thesis contains about 35 000 words,60 pictures and charts.
