Incommensurability Of Orthodox Urban Design Paradigm

I participated into site analsis of Hangzhou urban villages with my fellows under the instruction of Prof.Wangshu.We analyzed,recorded and catagorized 64 urban villages over two weeks.I realized diversity and difference when I was analyzing.Different chronological and typical buildings are erected inside these areas.Voluntarily built structure are grown up on these buildings.But there are quantities of new buildings outside these areas,such as skyscrapers or highways.I have never deeply analyzed problems of cities and urban villages though a bit access during undergraduate study.I notice that diversity is vanishing.It comes from nowadays Chinese urban villages which is predestined to be refurbished or demolished.Why Chinese urban villages are regarded as obstacles during Chinese urbanization? Why does every governer want to eliminate them? It is closely related to Chinese ideology.We used Soviet urban planning modes for exemplar after 1949.But Soviet urban planning modes are influenced by classicism and functionalism.So we are planning cities by some general angles,such as functions and economy.This approach intends to be a kind of urban planning ‘paradigm’.Chinese urban villages are shown when modernist were planning cities.But they are a special system different from modern urban planning.Or we can consider it is another ‘paradigm’.The simplist way for urban planners to design urban villages is to demolish and reassign new functions to them because modernism is inefficient to them.It expresses incompatibility when functional urban planning are facing urban villages.We should introspect urban planners’ modern means.We should think about if modernism fits into Chinese urban villages.They are not urban refurbishment.They are a sort of alternatives from a paradigm to another,which is a urban systematic transition.My thesis rethinkes problems from cities and villages.It is a ideology or methdology about transition of architectural trend,construction and urban design,which includes philosphical architectural and urban concept of Prof.Wangshu,Aldo Rossi and Thomas Kuhn.
