An Initial Study About The Paradigm Of Master Plans In China

Presently there are some problems existing in domestic MASTER PLANs. Lots of efforts have been made, but the effect was not so satisfying. The fatal reason for such a situation is that most of the improvements are always considered under the methodology level, rather than having a clear realization about the status from the epistemology level first. This study is trying to fulfil this shortage exactly.Paradigm was proposed by Thomas S. Kuhn, a philosopher of science in America, which was made to explain the mechanism of scientific progress. Paradigm is an epistemological concept, it is ubiquitous, abstract, integrated, and hierarchic. It provides a possible way to re-realize the status of domestic master plans, which is more outer-system, objective, thorough and systematic.The domestic study of the status is usually presented as problems, which can be sorted to 12 aspects. But they are biased judgments rather than objective description, and are still inner-system and methodologically approached.Explain the meaning of paradigm in master plan. Point out all the paradigms after analyzing. They contain outer paradigms including 10 aspects and 59 items, and inner paradigms including 7 aspects, which are:Blueprinted Plan, Economic Leading, Central-City Angle, Ward-Restricted Boundaries, Thorough Guidance, Inner-System Improvement, and Technical Approach.Choose cases of master plan from 15 different cities. By sorting out the contents, it testifies that the outer paradigms are common.Study several successive the Regulation:Guidance of Urban Planning, sort out and analyze the contents relevant to master plan, abstract the core issues and primarily construct the logic system of domestic master plan. By above efforts along with the case study, it has testified the inner paradigms.Study the successive master plans of Guangzhou, point out and sort out the main contents, abstract the core issues and secondary construct the logic system. By doing this it testifies the outer paradigms and the inner ones as well.Finally, point out that one of the most important reasons causing the great difficulties in improving the paradigms is the apriori correctness of the existing paradigms. The optimization of master plan must be considered whole-systematically from outside the master plan. Several suggestions are given for further study under such same angle.The whole thesis contains about 39 000 words,11 pictures and charts.
