The Openness Of Modern Private Gardens In Northern Zhejiang

Modern Chinese gardens are been in the transitional stage of Chinese Garden History,which became an important turning point for the development of traditional gardens to modern and contemporary landscapes.As an important branch of Private Gardens in Jiangnan(the south of the Yangtze River),which led by modern Confucian businessmen,Private Gardens in northern Zhejiang inherit the traditional ideas and integrate Chinese and Western cultures.That promotes the openness characteristics of modern Private Gardens in northern Zhejiang and makes bold attempts for the transformation of garden art.This dissertation takes three Modern Private Gardens in northern Zhejiang which are remaining,available for studying and not a small scale as the main research objects.This research will be through literature analysis,field surveys,investigations,and mapping,and also combined with the garden art "six culverts" theory of method.The openness characteristics of Modern Private Gardens in northern Zhejiang are mainly reflected in the four aspects of the Ideal State,Conception,Gardening Layout and Construction.In modern China,the modern national capitalist groups were rose rapidly,the regional culture in the north of Zhejiang was active,and the openness social morals and living style affected by “Western Winds and the East”.The modern northern Zhejiang Private Gardens were bound to exhibit openness characteristics.Modern Confucian businessmen have become the mainstream of the garden owners,and they have put forward new functions for combining traditional Confucian clan concepts and businessmen' public openness mind.They brock the introvert artistic conception of traditional gardens,and made a new interpretation of the traditional "seclusion".The layout of the garden is widened and tolerant with the method,being no more "home garden blending" in traditional gardens,weakening and simplifying the garden buildings,emphasizing the natural landscape.The garden scenery is distinct,diminished and orderly,as well as keeping the complexity of multiple spaces.Meanwhile,the modern northern Zhejiang Private Gardens make adventurous exploration and attempts to combine traditional gardens with new styles.
