With the rapid development of urbanization,tourism,commerce,real estate in recent years,ancient towns in suburb of Shanghai is facing the issues of losing indigenous people,the demolition of historic buildings,the destructive reconstruction of houses.Ancient houses which are out of repair have been unable to meet the needs of the residents of modern life.Besides houses destruction,component incomplete and lacking of security due to natural factors,a more serious problem is that the indoor living comfort cannot up to the standard.This dissertation is thus set to look at residents’ living habitability in ancient towns of Sijing and Liantang.Firstly,to understand the history of towns and general conditions of architecture,literature and descriptive survey in the field are conducted.Secondly,questionnaire and household survey are carried out to understand the living conditions and satisfactionof residents,especially to acquire empirical data about building status,living space,physical properties and living facilities of houses.Last but most important,the dissertation aims to provide residents a more comfortable living conditions.Under the constraint of protection principles,suitable strategies for protection and utilization of Shanghai traditional houses are provided according to some specific design project and national codes which include transformation of the internal space,improvement of physical properties,traditional building renovation and living facilities updating,so that the habitability of traditional residence in Shanghai can be improved.
