In this article, the author firstly compared the four development stages of greening environment of the old residential quarters in Shanghai to determine the greening environment of Gongren Xincun built in Shanghai during 1950-1970.In terms of greening rate, population density, residential area distribution and housing price, the author analyzed the existing Gongren Xincun(old public house)initially built during 1950-1970 which are largely distributed in Xuhui District,Yangpu District,Putuo District,Zhabei District,Pudong New Area,Hongkou District.Through investigation and comparative analysis of three residential quarters in Pudong New Area,i.e.Shanggang,Gangji and Hu’er,the author investigated the greening status quo and explored the environmental modification for the residential area.Secondly, through such methods as field investigation(plant composition, plant frequency, and seasonal variation)and questionnaire, the author investigated the green status quo in the old residential area of Pudong New Area, and concluded that three prominent environmental issues to be modified for the investigation subject:(1)very low greening rate;(2)monotonous plant configuration color and low maintenance level;(3)gradually decreasing greening area, and dispute regarding modified parking lots, are needed to be solved. For the said three issues, the author proposed to improve the greening area through greening methods such as stereo greening, balcony greening and interbuilding green spaces;as for plant selection,it is recommended that native plants and common economical herbal plants that need less trimming and offer certain healthcare are adopted;the author proposed to discuss the individual green space adoption system for residents to reduce the greening and maintenance cost of a residential quarter;the author also proposed to build ecological shed-type parking lots for the purpose of relieving the dispute between greening and parking lots.In conclusion,it is still in the trial stage in all regions with respect to measures to improve the residential environment in old residential areas in China without an established theoretical system and with environmental modification frequently neglected in housing construction. Therefore, the author calls for the emphasis on the improved residential environment in old residential areas, especially those with ageing resident and high population density.
