General Design Study Of A Polar Icebreaking Research And Supply Vessel

The polar scientific study on sea-ice environment,ocean biology,ocean physics has an important influence of the global warming,sea-ice environment protection,biodiversity,and thus more countries pay more attention to polar scientific activities.As the development of polar scientific activities,a new research ice breaking vessel would be designed and constructed in China.Design of this type ship is only mastered in the traditional arctic countries,such as Finland,Russia,USA,and etc.There are neither rich experience nor the relevant data on the design ice breaker in China,so there are great challenges for deign departments,ship owners and regulatory departments.Several studies on designing polar research ice breaking vessel are conducted as follow:(1)The main elements of ice breaking capacity,polar ice conditions,ice class definitions and minimum of icebreaking engine power requirements of different rules are introduced and analyzed.(2)The ice breaking ship form,and the double acting form for fore and stern ice breaking are introduce and studied.(3)The principal dimensions,normal stability are specified and verified with an emphasis on ice-riding stability.Based on the ice-hull interaction conditions,ice load distribution and choice of the ice-frame system,studies on the ice class requirements of side shell structures are conducted by calculating and designing the ship structure with a consideration of ice load.Hopefully the work presented in the thesis will help master the key technologies involved and design new ice breaking vessel.
