| After more than 30 years of research, the protection of historic districts has formed abundant achievements, among which the design method is no longer limited to the protection of physical space. The vitality of historic blocks and the sustainable development of historic culture have become the core of attentions during recent years. From the perspective of narrative space theory, this study analyzed the cultural logic of urban design of historical districts and discussed the design concept of combining "events" with space so that the renewal and development of historical space can maintain its own uniqueness.Firstly, this paper demonstrates the feasibility and appropriateness of the theory of narrative space in urban design of historic districts. Then it puts forward the value and roles of the narrative space in historic districts and analyses the entry point of the application of the theory.Secondly,it proposes three elements of narrative space including time, space and events.Combining with the actual case of Zhaohua historic districts,it uses spatial syntax, event arrangement, field investigation, questionnaire survey and other methods to analyze each element qualitatively and quantitatively. This paper extracts the indexes of the three elements of narrative space and establishes the narrative space evaluation system of historical districts and determines the weight by analytic hierarchy process. The calculation results are integrated into the material space identification and historical event narrative of each event space in the historical districts. And the readability of the narrative space is obtained, which is used to represent the interaction between the narrative space and people and reflect the impact of historical culture. It is also used to check the urban design project and get the direction and clues of optimization by feedback.According to the evaluation results, this paper puts forward the corresponding protective urban design strategies of historical districts from three aspects in order to guide the further design, including the optimization of urban background environment, the design of narrative space and the cultural inheritance of narrative space. Finally, taking Luojiang historic district as an example, the analysis and evaluation methods of narrative space are applied in practice. The application of narrative space in the protective design of historic districts pays more attention to the effect of historical and cultural heritages and the experience and participation of space users. It puts forward a universal spatial analysis and evaluation method to provide feedback and guidance for relevant planning and design. |
