The urban public space, considered as the eye of urban, is becoming larger in sizewith higher and higher developing speed in the period of rapid urbanization in Chinatoday. However, some serious problems, such as the lost of urban character, thehomogeneity and mediocre of urban public space, had appeared as a result of theinappropriate urban construction without the inheritance of the rich culturalconnotations that the public space owns. So, in recent years, local governments havealso paid more attention to it. Meanwhile, the focus of planners and architects’researchof public space has turned from technology, function, social and economy to thecontinue of historical context and the construction of ecological environment. The author tries to research the design of urban public space with a newperspective by introducting the narrative theory in the field of literature. This articlesummarizes and refines the narrative elements of urban, and integrates the urbannarrative resources. With the guide of urban narrative themes, combining withenvironmental psychology, semiotics, connecting theory, place theory that are closelyrelated to the field of urban planning, and with the isomorphic and analogical field, asliterature, painting and film, that has similar narrative style with narrative design ofurban public, the author researches the way of design in two aspects, planning ofurban public space and design of individual public space, by using the narrative designleaded by the combination of multidisciplinary theory. In the aspect of urban publicspace planning based on the narrative theory, the author firstly did a theoretical studyin two ways, that are organizational strategy and structure. Secondly, the authorsummarized three strategies, that are combing temporal and spatial cues, unifying the spatial language and strengthening the cultural expression. Thirdly, the authororganized the temporal structure and the spatial structure of urban public space by theleading of such three strategies. Lastly, by learning from the hierarchical structure ofliterary works, integrated the elements of space, time, event, and organized the urbanpublic space of Ledu. In the aspect of urban individual public space, the authorgrouped the urban individual public space into three styles. The first style is called“real space” based on the nature. The second style is called “cultural space” based onthe historical context. The third style is called “imaginative space” based on thefashion life. Then presented their own narrative and expression techniques for thesethree spaces. At the end of this article, take Ledu center square as an example, designedthe individual public space with narrative theory.
