Research On The Names Of Balustrade

This paper takes the names of balustrade(GouLan)from the Pre-Qin Dynasty to the Song Dynasty as the object of study,and corresponds their physical forms to their literary images in order to explore the differences,connections and logic of their evolution.Firstly,this paper makes an analysis of the eight name of Goulan in YingZaoFaShi,and finds that one kind of GouLan:the pen,is often mentioned in conjunction with fences and hurdles,but it is found that there are many differences between pens and fences&hurdles on their forms,structure and use.Because of the same function of guarding things inside,pen is another appellation of GouLan.GouLan mentioned in YingZaoFaShi is actually balustrade of buildings.According to the complexity reflected,we can see that the names of GouLan can be divided into three different states:(1)vertical and horizontal frame state;(2)second frame attached state;(3)ornament attached state.Different names are consistent with the literary images required by their corresponding literary imagery.Diction of objects originates from the physical form,which is the way of development of GouLan.
