This paper study on the single column frictional system recording in YingzaoFashi madein the Song Dynasty. From the analytical point of view, we begin to do this study under thebasic idea which is exploring the structural elements’ working mechanism of Chinesetraditional timber building and making them together for studying the system’s properties. This paper is the analytical part of this big picture. This paper is only modeling singlecolumn frictional system of the3rd and the7th ts’ai recording in YingzaoFashi made in theSong Dynasty with FE software Abaqus. In the static FE analyses, monotonic horizontal loading was applied on these systems. The results from static analyses is consistent with the existing literature; In the dynamic FEanalyses, time history analyses of earthquake ground motion which were selected from thefour type site category was used. Considering the system dynamic energy dissipation,Rayleigh damp was introduced. The relative displacement and the absolute acceleration timehistory curve were presented and the relation between maximum value from FE results andthe properties of this system was discussed. All the FE models were established in Abaqus. Due to the great ability to analyses thecontact problem and the non-linear problem, this frictional system was obtained by Abaqus. The analyses work was well done. The results from static analyses are well for previousstudy. The dynamic results appear that the single column frictional system is sensitive to longperiod wave from earthquake ground motion. Comparing with engineering experience allfrom FE analyses is well.
