Construction industry has great impacts on the human society development in terms of economy, culture, and environment.Buildings provide comfortable indoor space, which satisfies our basic requirements, including dwelling, study, commercial activity etc. However, the building sector causes a large amount of primary energy consumption, wastage, and green-house gases emissions.Among these negative effects, issues about building energy consumption have received wide attention due to its high share.Since building design can largely determine energy performance of a building during its life, making a good building design is considered as an effective approach for building energy improvement.Currently, the building energy design process generally follows a “Prediction-Optimization” involved two-step framework,in which the building energy prediction is responsible for estimating the actual building energy consumption and the building energy saving optimization works for narrowing the gap between design objective and design scheme. In view of most research achievements aiming to acquire design tools for researchers rather than for designers, this study is intended to provide a useful design approach for designers from two items of “Prediction” and “Optimization”.This proposed approach can make the design more effective, convenient, and easy to meet owner demands. The main contents of this study are shown as follows:(1)Building energy prediction is the preliminary work for guiding building energy saving design.A three-step research scheme is developed in this chapter.Step 1 proposes a rapid 3D building energy modelling process according to the parameterized setting.Step 2 works for generating numerous simulation results by automatic running of EnergyPlus. With the help of the GA-BP,a prediction model is developed in Step 3 to predict building energy consumption. Finally,a case study is carried out to present the overall process and verify the availability of the proposed three-stage method.(2)Energy saving optimization process is subsequently carried out to achieve the design objectives. It establishes a goal program-based energy saving optimization model and developed a genetic algorithm based iterative solution process. The goal program model is developed in response to the building design requirements. It can maximize the conversion of design requirements into mathematical expressions. In order to improve the overall optimization efficiency, genetic algorithm is employed to solve the goal program model. Finally,a case study proves the effectiveness and the extensibility of the proposed method. In summary, based on the key issues to be solved in the current green building design research field, this study proposes an improved design approach for the two processes of energy consumption prediction and energy saving optimization respectively. The proposed approach can provide designers with a convenient and efficient design process, and it is the key achievement to provide solutions for practical engineering applications in green building research. It helps to promote the sustainable development research findings and the informalization construction in the construction industry.
