Traditional villages in China were built Through the methods that investigation of the terrain and identification of river system by the ancients. The traditional residences are the embodiment of artisans’ creation wisdom,in here each place designed reflects a kind of low-technology ecological design tactics. All the tactics were designed to construct a satisfied place to live passively and to reach the highest level that man has a very close relationship to nature. Now most of the traditional residences have declined, but their low-technology ecological passive design methods are retained as the culture inheritance of adapting to region ecological environment, and the methods can be used in modern rural residences usefully on account of their low cost characteristics.Northern Guangxi is the center of politics, economy and culture of Lingnan area, because of the big population of the region’s ethnic minorities,it often represents stilt style architecture of Lingnan’s traditional house, but there are also plenty of the han nationality traditional villages. The ancestors of these han nationality traditional villages usually were officials and literatus, the traditional residences they built have a deeply rooted culture, especially the traditional houses in Xianggui Corridor—a famous commercial road.Four typical han nationality traditional villages in Xianggui Corridor of Northern Guangxi are selected as a representative to sum up passive design methods which are appropriate for construction of modern rural residences in Northern Guangxi through the analyses of building wind environment and thermal environment. Then the paper designs a new residence as an example to explain how to use these passive design methods extracted from traditional residences in Northern Guangxi, and to confirm that the conclusions of this study are feasible. The full text is divided into four parts:The first part is an introduction, which introduces the research background, research purposes, meaning and methods, and research framework and concept definition of the study object. The second part analyses the climate characteristics in Northern Guangxi Xianggui Corridor area and the current situations of the rural residence there. At first, this part proposes that residential building construction’s point designs in this region are Shading Design and natural ventilation through analyzes the climatic features. Then finds out the use of this region’s passive design methods has great potential by primary study on applicable passive design methods;among these methods, natural ventilation works significantly. Finally, concludes the traditional residences’ and new houses’ advantages and disadvantages in traditional villages by analysis of the current situations of the rural residence:traditional residences are efficient at ventilation and windshield, but neglect building orientation and sectorization is more singleness; The modern rural residences’ ventilation and building orientation can’t be guaranteed, but their sectorization is ample. The third part is a design theory analysis of traditional residences in Northern Guangxi Xianggui Corridor area.Three analysis methods to make a concrete analysis of traditional residences’ building wind environment and thermal environment both indoor and outdoor are as followings: the Ecotect software analysis, using calculation formulas to evaluate thermal performance of building envelope, field measurement.Through the above means, the conclusions that traditional houses have good ventilation, poor natural lighting and sunshine are confirmed, and provide evidence for extracting passive design methods from traditional residences in the following pages. The forth part is the application instance using the traditional residences’ passive design methods. The passive design methods which are applicable to the modern rural residences are concluded and validated.
