Although the utilization of the Mixed-used complexes underground space is common, some of which are either isolated,or improperly connected with their urban surrounding. These defects lead to low efficiency and low accessibility of the mixed-used complex’s underground space, making the overall mixed-used complex unable to fully function as the transportation joint for the city, and potentially hinder the development of nearby urban underground public space. The thesis uses the concept of “Mixed-used complex underground public jointing space”,to tentatively present design approaches for the underground public space of mixed-use complexes in order to improve the existing situations. The underground public jointing space in mixed-used complexes is a important part of the mixed-used complex,it correlates different functions inside the mixed-used complex underground space, and bridges between urban areas and the building, the appropriate design of which could optimize the mixed-used complex underground public space and improves the urban underground pedestrian network performance. The thesis uses architectural theories such as the compact city theory, the mixed land use theory, and the integration of city and building theory as theoretical basis,in additionally,by recognizing the characteristic of mixed-used complexes,to derive the three aspects of the underground public jointing space:the aspect of the integration of mixed-used complexes underground public space and the city;the aspect of the integration of mixed-used complexes under and above ground space, and the aspect of the place making for mixed-used complex underground space, and to give the design strategy accordingly.Base on these strategies, the thesis selects six elements within the mixed-used complex that significantly influence its underground public jointing space, and provides specific design mechanisms correspondingly. The final chapter uses three mixed-used complex underground public spaces in Hongkong,Singapore and Beijing as examples,to demonstrate that a sufficient mixed-used complex includes a sufficiently designed underground jointing public space, and to prove the credibility of the thesis conclusions.
