The gardens in the south of the Yangtze (which is called Jiangnan gardens) of the period of Ming and Qing Dynasty represent the tallest level of the ancient scenery gardens in our country and occupy very important status in classical garden history of our country and even the world. And, in Jiangnan gardens, the exquisite and suitable garden building decoration is an indispensable quintessence part of forming its whole style. By taking the analyses of the development of the south of the Yangtze and the prosperity of its gardens as prerequisite and background, this article has sorted out the garden building decoration of the period of Ming and Qing Dynasties, and proceeds from its relationship with the construction of garden, discusses the relationship between decoration and garden building, garden landscape, analyzes some principles and skills of decoration, and then discusses the artistic characteristic of its own and the consummate skill level which supports its implementation. By the research of this article, I hope the traditional architecture culture contained in Jiangnan garden building decoration can be critically inherited and play some reference function on real creation.
