The experiment was conducted to study the effects of different selenium sources of Enshi Cardamine and sodium selenite on the growth performance, blood biochemical index, antioxidant capacity, meat quality and behavior of meat rabbits.108 35-day-old weaned rabbits with similar body weight were randomly divided into three groups. Each group had six replicates, with six rabbits in each replicate.Three groups were control group(basal diet),sodium selenite group(basal diet +1mg/kg sodium selenite)and Enshi Cardamine Group(adding 1.33% levels of Enshi Cardamine, amounting 1mg/kg organic selenium in diet). The results were as follows:(1)Compared with the control group, the Cardamine group significantly increased the average daily food intake and average daily gain(P<0.05),and the average daily gain of the Cardamine group was significantly higher than that of the sodium selenite group(P<0.05).However,the average daily gain and daily feed intake of sodium selenite group were not significantly different from those of the control group(P>0.05).(2)Compared with the control group, the addition of Cardamine and sodium selenite to the diet had no significant effect on the slaughtering performance and organ index of meat rabbits(P>0.05).(3)Compared with the control group, the addition of Cardaminet could significantly increase the level of high density lipoprotein and the activity of glutathione peroxidase in serum(P<0.05),but significantly reduced the content of malondialdehyde in serum(P<0.05),which enhanced the antioxidant capacity of blood.(4)Compared with the control group, the Cardamine group significantly decreased the a* and b* values of dorsal muscles(P<0.05)and significantly increased the L* value of leg muscle(P<0.05).At same time, the muscle water loss rate and shear force of the two groups were significantly decreased(P<0.05).The cooked meat rate of muscle was significantly increased(P<0.05),the water loss rate and shear force of the muscles inthe Cardamine group were significantly lower than that of the sodium selenite group(P<0.05).Compared with the control group and the sodium selenite group, the muscle water loss rate of the Cardamine group was significantly reduced after 5 days of slaughter(P<0.01),but L* value and a * value of meat were significantly increased(P<0.05).(5)Compared with the control group and the sodium selenite group, the Cardamine group significantly increased the dry matter of the muscle(P<0.05),and had no significant effect on the crude protein and crude fat of the meat quality(P>0.05).(6)The percentage of the duration time of sniffing and standing in the Cardamine group was significantly higher than that in control group(P<0.05),with no significant difference from sodium selenite group(P>0.05),the duration time and frequency of biting behavior in sodium selenite group were significantly lower than those in the control group(P<0.05),the social frequency of the Cardamine group was significantly lower than that of sodium selenite group(P<0.05),with no significant difference from the control group(P>0.05).In conclusion, the growth performance, blood antioxidant capacity, meat color, meat tenderness and animal welfare were better improved with 1.33% dietary Cardamine.
